Newberry Challenge

Hattie Big SkyHattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I followed the advice of Mr. Schu and Colby Sharp on Nerdy Book Club and dug into this Newberry winner. This was a lovely book about a young girl that takes off from Iowa to Montana to homestead during WWI. It is a very interesting time period and region. I actually had relatives who did leave Iowa to set up a homestead in Montana. It was fascinating to experience all the struggles of these tough people. Kirby Larson also deftly wove in the issue of anti-German sentiment because of the war. Hattie is an endearing protagonist that we watch take on insurmountable obstacles and mature into a woman of tremendous character.
It is a book perfect for middle schoolers who love historical fiction. I don’t always agree with the Newberry choices, but this one is very deserving.
